Walker Control was founded in 1996 by John Walker as the partnership JR & RT Walker. Operations were in a 30m2 shed at John’s home in Prospect, SA and the first sale was to Rototech to assemble and wire motor starters.
Initially the business focused on the manufacturing industry in South Australia. However, by 2001 there was growing concern at the future of these markets. When opportunities arose with ABB in 2004, for the manufacture of transformer cooling control systems, this led to a shift in focus to the Utilities sector. With this the product offering evolved into the custom manufacture of MV and HV secondary protection, control and monitoring systems.
By 2011 the business required larger premises and relocated a 300m2 facility in Wingfield, SA.
In 2015, recognising the benefits of an equity partner, John sold a majority holding to Mayfield Group Holdings and simultaneously the new company Walker Control Pty Ltd was registered to better reflect the company value proposition.
In January 2019 the business relocated to a 920m2 premise in Cavan.
In February 2021 John sold his remaining shareholding to Mayfield Group Holdings Ltd and then in July 2021 the business relocated to the current premises in Edinburgh, SA.
